Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after Foot Mercato revealed that Newcastle are interested in signing Matteo Guendouzi.

What’s the story?

Well, Newcastle may not even be able to complete this deal if Marseille activate the option to buy clause given to them by Arsenal.

Guendouzi is currently on a season-long loan in France, where Marseille hold the option to buy him for just €11m (£9m) once the season is over.

However, Newcastle are still keen, and will presumably submit a bid if Marseille decided not to sign the 22-year-old.

The move could still happen regardless, as Foot Mercato outline how Marseille can buy him, and then sell him for a swift profit, if they want to.

After finding life tough under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, the Frenchman is starting to find his feet in Ligue 1.

Guendouzi has scored three goals and has also provided three assists in 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

In that respect, it’s no surprise to see Newcastle express an interest.

Newcastle could embarrass Arsenal

If the Magpies do manage to get their hands on Guendouzi, it would be a move with the potential to embarrass Arsenal.

With his talent, it’s likely that Marseille will activate their £9m option, before potentially selling to Newcastle.

If that happens, and Guendouzi becomes a star in the Premier League, many will be asking why the Gunners allowed him to leave.

It’s happened before, when Arsenal let Serge Gnabry go, and the German is now among Europe’s best at Bayern Munich.

In our view, Edu and Arteta will be praying the same doesn’t happen with Guendouzi, or there could be riots in north London.

For now, let’s see what the Arsenal fans on Twitter have been saying about Foot Mercato‘s news…
