Southampton have sent their scouts to track RB Salzburg striker Chukwubuike Adamu, but could face significant rival interest for any potential transfer, according to the Daily Mail.

Adamu is building a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards with his efforts in Austria. The 20-year-old has scored four goals and laid on one assist in 19 games, starting six, so far this season.

He joined the Red Bull Arena outfit in his youth, and is enjoying his first-team breakthrough campaign this term. Adamu convinced Die Roten Bullen to hand the Austria U21 starlet his chance after scoring eight in 18 games during a four-month loan at St Gallen last season.

Southampton have now joined the growing list of clubs monitoring Adamu’s efforts with RB Salzburg ahead of potential future transfers. Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco and several German Bundesliga clubs also admire what the Nigerian-born talent is showing this season.

But Austrian Bundesliga leaders RB Salzburg will demand any interested party pays £15m for Adamu. They extended his contract last October to 2025 with the aim of him remaining at the club long-term.

Should Southampton target RB Salzburg talent Adamu?

Adamu is taking his chances to impress in the RB Salzburg first-team, to attract transfer interest from Southampton, among many. He has also been prolific in junior international football with nine goals in nine caps for Austria’s U21s.

Ralph Hasenhuttl will likely look to improve the Saints attack next year after a goal-shy start to the season. The St Mary’s outfit have only scored nine times in their opening 10 Premier League fixtures.

Armando Broja and James Ward-Prowse are also their joint-top scorer with just two goals each. Four players, including £15m summer signing Adam Armstrong, have found the back of the net once. Leaving Hasenhuttl with a pressing need for further forward options.
