Newcastle United are now interested in luring Manchester City’s Brian Marwood to St James’ Park as their new sporting director.

That’s according to The Times, who claim that Newcastle have made their first move for Marwood by sounding him out for a switch to Tyneside.

Marwood allegedly wants any move to go through the two clubs officially rather than negotiating in secret.

That may slow down Newcastle’s move, but Marwood appears to be a strong candidate for the job.

The likes of Luis Campos, Paul Mitchell, Antero Henrique and Ralf Rangnick have all been mentioned, but Marwood could now head to Newcastle.

Who is Newcastle target Brian Marwood?

Marwood current works as Manchester City’s managing director of global football.

The 61-year-old has been with City since 2009, meaning he knows exactly how to help build up a club after a takeover.

That would be vital for Newcastle as the inexperience of this new regime seems to be hampering them, so having somebody like Marwood would be massive.

A former Sheffield Wednesday, Arsenal and Sheffield United player, Marwood was born in the North East town of Seaham.

A move to Newcastle would take Marwood closer to his roots, and the Magpies may hope that factor helps them.
