A new trailer for the ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ movie has just been launched online, but what date will the anime film release in Japan and around the world?
In the weeks leading up to the season 1 finale of Jujutsu Kaisen, there were reports circulating on social media that an online domain was registered for a movie.
Only hours before the finale aired on March 26th, this was confirmed with the announcement that a movie by the title of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ (also referred to as JJK0) will be produced by MAPPA.
So, what is the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie about, what date will it release and how can you watch the film around the world?
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie: Release date
The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 anime movie is set to release in Japan on December 24th, 2021.
Alongside the release of the first teaser trailer, it was announced that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 would debut in Winter 2021. Then, following an event in Japan, the production team then confirmed that the film would premiere in cinemas on Christmas Eve.
However, fans should remember that this release date will only concern the films theatrical release in Japan and that no information on the international premiere has been revealed.
The most likely scenario is that the movie will release in theatres outside Japan a few months after its national debut in Spring 2022 – similar to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie: Plot
It has been confirmed that JJK0 will adapt the prequel story to the anime series, titled ‘Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School’.
Per the Jujutsu Kaisen Fandom page, the movie will adapt the Cursed Child Arc. The story here is about a young boy called Yuta Okkotsu, who is haunted by his childhood friend Rika.
Rika’s spirit has been cursed and turns into a cursed-entity that mercilessly kills anyone who she deems a threat to Yuta.
Yuta is convinced to join Jujutsu High by Satoru Gojo and begins to train in Jujutsu sorcery, “alongside his new peers: Maki Zenin, a Cursed Tools user, Toge Inumaki, a Cursed Speech user, and Panda, a seemingly talking panda bear.”
“Thanks to connections made with friends and finding his place at Jujutsu High, Yuta begins to gain the confidence to feel alive. He even begins to become comfortable with his abilities. However, as the training progresses Yuta learns that the dangers of the Jujutsu World go far beyond that of evil spirits.” – Jujutsu Kaisen Fandom.
Voice cast and staff members…
MAPPA are returning to animate Jujutsu Kaisen 0, with Toho at the distribution helm.
Many of the staff members for JJK season 1 will also be returning to work on the upcoming movie, with the director set to be Sung Hoo Park – who was in charge of The God of High School.
The main character (Yuta Okkotsu) will be voiced by Megumi Ogata. The 56-year-old voice actress is best known for her roles in Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, Assassination Classroom and Bleach.
Playing Rika Orimoto will be Kana Hanazawa, who fans will recognise from The Quintessential Quintuplets, Food Wars, Pokemon Journeys and Demon Slayer.
Per the JJK Fandom page, the following cast members will reprise their roles in the upcoming movie:
- Maki Zenin: Mikako Komatsu
- Toge Inumaki: Koki Uchiyama
- Panda: Tomokazu Seki
- Satoru Gojo: Yuichi Nakamura
- Suguru Geto: Takahiro Sakurai
Streaming Jujutsu Kaisen 0…
At the time of writing, it has not been confirmed that the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie will be available to view on various streaming platforms.
However, if the movie releases in a similar manner to that of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Japanese premiere, followed by international premiere and then online streaming), then it’s a safe bet that the film will debut online at some point in 2022.
The Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie was set to release internationally shortly after its domestic opening, with the pandemic causing all kinds of issues for distribution.
Assuming Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will release theatrically around the world by Spring, HITC predicts that the movie will release on streaming platforms by June 2022.
This article will be updated as soon as more information on the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie is confirmed, so keep checking back in!
