Liverpool beat Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid yet again at Anfield in the Champions League last night.

Jurgen Klopp’s siide recorded a pretty easy 2-0 win over the Spanish giants on Merseyside to qualify for the last 16 of the competition, with two group outings yet to play.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane in the first half gave Liverpool the win and with Felipe being sent off for the visitors before the break, there was never hope of a second-half comeback.

One of the subplots to this game centered around whether Klopp and the Atletico boss would shake hands after the game, after the latter snubbed the German in Madrid a couple of weeks ago.

There was no televised handshake between the pair afterwards last night, but Simeone did stick around on the touchline while the Liverpool boss congratulated his players on the field.

But according to Dion Dublin, the South American headed for the tunnel as soon as he saw Klopp coming toward him.

He told BBC Sport: “Here we go. Diego Simeone is waiting for all of his players on the field and Jurgen Klopp came towards him and then Simeone turned around and went back down the tunnel! Klopp doesn’t care, he’s won the game.”

Strange

Considering he stuck around in his dugout for so long, rather than going straight down the tunnel at the final whistle, it looked like Simeone was prepared to be magnanimous and congratulate the Liverpool boss in person.

So to then leave as soon as Klopp was exiting the field was, well, a little strange.

But Dublin is right – the Reds man won’t care one iota.

His troops have 12 points from a possible 12 in the Champions League, seven more than the second-placed side – Porto, who are one point ahead of Simeone’s side in third.
