Newcastle United legend John Beresford has implored the club to make loan bids for Tottenham’s Harry Winks and Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek, speaking to talkSPORT (2 November, 11am).
We’ve all been told, at some point or another, not to wish our lives away.
But long-suffering Newcastle supporters can be forgiven if they’re already counting down the days until 1 January, dreaming of toasting a ‘happy new centre-back’.
Winless after ten games and six points adrift of safety already, the mid-season transfer window may be their best chance of survival.
According to The Telegraph, the club’s new Saudi Arabian owners have £50 million set aside for the winter.
And with Newcastle crying out for a commanding central defender, left-back, dominant defensive midfielder and arguably another striker, it remains to be seen how far that war chest can go in an era where Joelinton and Miguel Almiron set the club back more than £60 million combined.
A couple of short-term loan signings would serve to boost a paper-thin squad while leaving plenty of funds for other additions.
Could Newcastle sign Van de Beek and Harry Winks?
“(Newcastle need reinforcements) right through the spine,” says Beresford, highlighting the potential availability of two talented playmakers who have completed a combined 66 minutes of Premier League football this season.
“Up front we’re OK with (Callum) Wilson and (Allan) Saint-Maximin. But we need a centre-half, we need a leader and we need creativity.

“Sometimes you don’t have to spend! Harry Winks is out of favour at Spurs, you’ve got Van de Beek at Manchester United – you could get them on loan.
“That’s going to improve you straight away. But this is not a quick fix. It’s like an emergency where all you’ve got to do is figure out a way to get enough points to finish fourth from bottom and then you can move on to bigger and better things.”
Van de Beek and Winks have already been linked with mid-season moves to St James’ Park.
Man United blocked Everton’s attempts to sign their £34 million misfit in the summer, too, while Winks’ future at Tottenham is more uncertain than ever following today’s appointment of Antonio Conte.
