Newcastle United hope to have Unai Emery on board as their new manager this week – but there is a big gap to bridge in terms of the money on offer.

The Daily Mail claim that Amanda Staveley and PIF want to have a deal done for Emery inside the next 48 hours.

Villarreal boss Emery has emerged as Newcastle’s top choice for the job despite winning just twice in La Liga this season.

However, The Telegraph claim that a contract has been presented to Emery’s entourage – and right now, there is a big gap.

It’s claimed that the two parties are ‘some way apart’ on a deal, with Newcastle needing to offer Emery more money to take the job.

That leaves Newcastle in a race against time to get Emery in by Thursday as they currently hope.

Emery, once branded a ‘genius’ by Ian Wright, has unfinished business in England having failed to last even two seasons at Arsenal.

The Spaniard won the Europa League for the fourth time in his career last season, but hasn’t exactly impressed so far this term.

Emery doesn’t have recent experience of a relegation battle either, which Newcastle absolutely find themselves in after Steve Bruce’s exit.

With a £6million compensation fee and a big salary, Newcastle are really pushing the boat out to land Emery.
