AC Milan legend Alessandro Nesta is not surprised to see Franck Kessie consider a move away from the Serie A leaders amid interest from Premier League giants Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, as he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Soaring to the top of the Serie A table following a 1-0 victory over Torino in midweek, why on earth would anyone turn their back on a Milan side dreaming of glory once again following a decade of disappointment?
The Rossoneri have won nine of their ten league games so far, after all, and a first Scudetto triumph since the Max Allegri days feels like a realistic possibility.
Whether Kessie is willing to stick around until the title is won remains to be seen.
Milan’s midfield general is due to become a free-agent next summer and, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, has rejected the chance to sign a new £110,000-a-week deal at the San Siro.
Liverpool and Spurs headline a host of Premier League clubs eyeing up a potential cut-price January deal for a man whose market value has gone from £43 million to just £7 million in a matter of months, with Arsenal, Everton and Leicester City also linked (90Min).
And while Nesta would be disappointed to see Kessie part ways with a Milan side on the up, he understands that keeping a key player out of the clutches of the ‘super-rich’ may be easier said than done.
Is Franck Kessie leaving AC Milan in January?
“The rules are wrong, the whole system needs to be revised. Every year the club cannot be taken by the neck from someone, there will always be a super-rich who arrives (and tries to sign one of Milan’s players),” said Nesta, the two-time Champions League winning centre-half.

“Even for Milan, it is difficult to keep the strongest players if the offers are so big.
“I understand why Kessie is tempted (to leave). He is not from Milan, he has no specific ties. It is human nature to want to try and play elsewhere.”
One of the finest midfielders in Italian football, Kessie has gone from strength to strength since joining Milan from Atalanta four years ago.
