According to The Star, Newcastle and Leeds are interested in signing Reading maestro John Swift, who is enjoying a fine season so far.

What’s the story?

Well, it’s no surprise to see Newcastle and Leeds eyeing the 26-year-old.

Swift has been in phenomenal form for the Royals this term, scoring eight goals in 14 Championship appearances.

Impressively, Swift has provided six assists as well.

Brentford are also said to be keen on the 13-cap England Under-21 international, who has improved significantly since last term.

In 14 appearances last season, Swift scored just one goal.

Whatever the Reading No.10 did over the summer has certainly had a tremendous impact on his performances.

Swift nearly joined Sheffield United, but the Blades were only willing to pay £3.5m whereas Reading wanted £7m (The Star).

Now, they could easily demand double that, given his form so far.

What could John Swift offer Newcastle or Leeds?

Clearly, Swift could offer Marcelo Bielsa or the Magpies a huge goal threat from midfield.

It’s no wonder he’s been compared to Frank Lampard, arguably the greatest goalscoring midfielder of his generation.

When writing a detailed report on Swift, Outside Of The Boot outlined how his late runs into the box and shooting technique remind them of the Chelsea legend.

Swift is just what Bielsa needs right now, as Leeds are struggling with a serious lack of depth in midfield.

In Newcastle’s case, they are struggling with a lack of quality in almost every area – Amanda Staveley and co. are set to spend millions on an overhaul after the takeover.

Keep an eye on this saga, as we can’t foresee Swift staying in the Championship for much longer – he is outgrowing the second tier.
