Liverpool are through to the last eight of the Carabao Cup after beating Preston North End 2-0, with Nat Phillips turning in a strong performance.

The Reds were lucky to be going in at half time drawing 0-0, with Preston squandering some great chances to score.

In the end, Liverpool did find the breakthrough as Takumi Minamino flicked a Neco Williams cross into the net.

Divock Origi’s nonchalant finish made it 2-0 to Liverpool, securing a fairly comfortable passage into the last eight in the end.

This wasn’t vintage Liverpool as a number of fringe and young players came in, but they got the job done.

Liverpool fans praise Phillips

Defender Nat Phillips came on at half time for Joel Matip having again been left out of the starting XI.

The 24-year-old hasn’t started a single game this season despite impressing fans last term.

Phillips was eventually brought on, and he really helped nullify any Preston attacks with his patented ability to head and clear everything.

You don’t really think of a centre back changing the game, but Phillips did that for Liverpool.

Fans have been taking to Twitter to suggest that Phillips is a £25million player and far better than Harry Maguire.

Others feel that Phillips is ‘on another level’ and ‘still class’ even without regular playing time.

There was some concern over losing Phillips down the line, but Liverpool fans simply loved his display at Deepdale.
