Brace yourselves. The doctor has some bad news.

There are plenty of medical dramas on the box, but arguably very few boast the dedicated following of The Good Doctor.

Developed by David Shore and based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name, audiences were first invited into San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital back in 2017. Thankfully, unlike an actual hospital, it has been a place fans have been eager to get back into whenever an episode ends.

Fortunately, we’ve been getting deeper into the fifth season as of late, but audiences will have to balance the happiness with heartbreak, especially considering this latest update.

It has been confirmed that a series regular is soon set to make an exit, so why is Osvaldo Benavides leaving The Good Doctor as Mateo?

Why is Osvaldo Benavides leaving The Good Doctor as Mateo?

The 42-year-old Mexican actor is yet to comment on his forthcoming departure from The Good Doctor and Sony Pictures Television declined to comment on TVLine’s report.

However, there is reason to believe that it’s a personal decision that Osvaldo has made, rather than an issue behind the scenes on the show itself.

This is because he made his debut as a guest-star on The Good Doctor back in the season 4 finale. Then, when it was confirmed that Antonia Thomas (who plays Dr Claire Browne) was leaving at the end of that season, Osvaldo was promoted to series regular.

This decision demonstrates that the crew and producers had good faith in him to tackle more substantial responsibilities aboard the show. Considering he has only been a series regular for a few months and is now leaving, it’s likely that he has decided to step off the project due to personal reasons.

As of yet, it’s uncertain how he’ll make an exit from the narrative but details are sure to emerge soon.

Is he on Instagram?

Yes, he’s on Instagram and you can find him at osvaldobenavides.
As recently as September, he has posted to help promote The Good Doctor, so it’s clear he has been enthusiastic about being part of the show heading into season 5.

He hasn’t posted anything about leaving on social media just yet.

Ahead of the season 5 premiere, executive producer David Shore shed some light on Mateo’s journey ahead while chatting with TVLine:

“In terms of his training, he is a fairly senior doctor. But because of his past, because of his history, he is going to have to learn to swallow his pride a little bit.”

As we’ve already established in the season, his journey in the hospital won’t be a straightforward one. However, now that we know Mateo won’t have a future there, this could be how they usher in his departure.

Perhaps a significant conflict with other staff could result in him being potentially fired or compel him to walk away.
