“Dreams are messages from the deep.”

Dune is a tricky one. For some, it’s a universe that they have infinite knowledge of; obsessive to the point they could probably tell you how the spice on Arrakis feels sifting through their fingers. On the other hand, there will be others whose relationship with it began the second Denis Villeneuve’s film graced the screen.

Serving as an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s influential novel of the same name, this sci-fi epic boasting an all-star cast is sure to prove divisive as more and more audiences flock to see it in the coming weeks.

You may have already seen viewers complaining that it feels incomplete but a good comparison is Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

At the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, there are many more Middle Earth miles to walk. Indeed, at the end of Dune, there is still plenty more story to be told.

It is titled ‘Dune: Part One’, which will undoubtedly have the masses thinking “well, how many parts of Dune are we talking about here?” Well, let’s get it explained…

How many parts of Dune will there be?

Denis Villeneuve plans for Dune to be made up of two parts, so audiences can expect one more blockbuster to complete this epic tale of galactic conflict.

Variety highlights that writing for Part Two was ongoing in September, and as it turns out, Denis only agreed to come aboard as director if Warner Bros. and Legendary allowed him to split the mighty novel into two movies.

They agreed and now we’re left eagerly anticipating the concluding chapter.

While in conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the 54-year-old French Canadian filmmaker revealed that it was incredibly difficult to know where to end Part One:

“The book is so dense. It’s a story that takes its strength from details…The question was, when do we stop the first part? That took a while, sculpting the end to make sure the audience will feel like they’ve been through a full journey, a full arc for Paul Atreides, but at the same time they would feel there’s something else coming after.”

For those unfamiliar with the novel, it will be interesting to find out where Paul’s path ends. However, there’s a very important question to address first…

Has Dune: Part Two been officially greenlit?

Yes, Warner Bros. and Legendary have officially greenlit a sequel and Deadline includes that it will be given a theatrical window in October 2023.

Given that the sequel would demand a significant budget, the first film’s financial success was ultimately imperative and it was reported after its opening weekend that it had hit a worldwide gross of over $200 million.

When Denis was speaking with Variety he actually said he wanted to film both parts back to back: “I wanted at the beginning to do the two parts simultaneously. For several reasons, it didn’t happen, and I agreed to the challenge of making part one and then wait to see if the movie rings enough enthusiasm.”

He added: “As I was doing the first part, I really put all my passion into it, in case it would be the only one. But I’m optimistic.”

His optimism was clearly well placed.
