West Ham United’s Declan Rice has praised the style of football that Tottenham Hotspur played at the London Stadium on Sunday on the Hammers’ official website.

Rice impressed

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by West Ham in the contest, and they didn’t manage to register a shot on target in the second-half.

However, Rice has now revealed that West Ham’s game-plan to combat Spurs’ strengths actually didn’t work particularly effectively.

David Moyes had wanted his side to force Tottenham into playing a long-ball game.

However, they were unable to make Spurs panic, with Nuno’s side generally retaining possession fairly well, even without creating much.

Tottenham ended up having the lion’s share of the ball, and Rice was impressed with the way that Nuno’s side built up their attacks.

But the England International was also delighted to pick up the three points, which has pushed West Ham into the top four.

“It’s unbelievable, a special day,” Rice said. “We know what a tough fixture this is, and we haven’t had the fans in for a while for a Spurs game, so to win today meant the place was rocking. It was really special out there.

“We said before the game that we really wanted to press them, get up to the ball and try to make them kick it long, but I thought they played some really good football to be fair and we had to show a different side to our game.

“But when we got the ball back we looked a threat, and then to get the goal from another set piece like we did and hold out was special.”

Spurs fans frustrated

Although Rice appears to be impressed by Tottenham’s style, their fans have not been so enamoured.

Nuno’s side have just nine goals in their opening nine Premier League matches, and their lack of attacking invention has really hurt them.

Tottenham’s failure to even trouble Lukasz Fabianski at the weekend is a real concern, given the forward quality that they have in their squad.

Nuno has now fallen back under increasing pressure, and a defeat against Manchester United at the weekend could prove to be a disaster.
