James Michael Tyler, who is most known for his role as Gunther on Friends, has died at the age of 59 from prostate cancer, his manager confirmed.

The actor appeared in 148 of Friends‘ 236 episodes as Gunther, the Central Perk cafe manager- which is where the main Friends gang could be seen hanging out every episode.

James Michael Tyler, who was most known for playing the role of Gunther on Friends, has died at the age of 59 from prostate cancer.

The actor’s manager said that Tyler passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

The statement announcing the actor’s read:

“The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh Friend)… but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband. If you met him once you made a friend for life.”

Tributes pour in for James Michael Tyler

Jennifer Aniston, who played Gunther’s long time crush Rachel on the show, shared a tribute for Tyler including a clip of their two characters together on Friends. She wrote:

“Friends would not have been the same without you. Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed.”

Courteney Cox, who played Monica, also wrote a tribute for Tyler, which reads: “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you. Rest In peace James.”

James Michael Tyler net worth revealed

James Michael Tyler’s net worth is $4 million, according to celebritynetworth.com.

The Daily Star reported that Tyler was paid an increasing amount whilst he was on the show and was originally estimated to be earning around £3,600 per episode. This reportedly increased to £7,000, then £14,000 and £21,000.

The actor told BANG Showbiz: “I’m very happy if I get a residual cheque, I do get residuals.”

He continued on to explain: “I wasn’t paid a million dollars an episode, of course, that would be a completely different story. I’m paid for episodes I spoke in and it’s a sliding scale, I don’t know how it works.”
