Alan Shearer has stated that he hopes Newcastle United’s next manager ‘understands how much the football club means to the supporters’, as he told the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

The St James’ Park legend shared that the fans in Newcastle ‘work all week’ to watch their team at the weekend, and in return, they want ‘hope’ and ‘excitement’.

With a Saudi-led group taking charge of Newcastle, and Mike Ashley now out of the door, it seems as though that hope is now lingering over the North East once again.

But, the club have to focus on the present, and it’s not exactly great reading – winless, sitting in the relegation zone and only above rock-bottom Norwich.

That’s why Shearer touched upon the ‘big’ calls that need to be made by those running the Newcastle ship now, as he made a claim about the next manager.

“There are so many big decisions to be made by Newcastle United,” said Shearer. “What do they do? Do they appoint a manager? Chief executive? Director of football?

“There has been every name thrown about for us to look at – But I hope it’s one that understands how big the football club is.

“Understand how much the football club means to the supporters because that is hugely important.

“The fans in Newcastle, they work all week, they work all week to go and watch their team on a Saturday.

“To spend their money on a Saturday and have a good time. They don’t mind working hard. But, in return, they want that hope and excitement. They now have got that.”

Steve Bruce is now out of the door, so there isn’t anyone the supporters can now attach to the quite dreadful Ashley era.

But even though an experienced Premier League boss like Bruce couldn’t get them out of the current hole they find themselves in, then that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t go down that road.

The likes of Eddie Howe, who is an attack-minded manager and currently out-of-work, have that experience.

Plus, he has worked with both Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser before, and whilst Newcastle fans will be hoping for a manager of a higher calibre, it’s the short-term they need to think of right now.
