All of the greatest blockbusters arguably boast a diverse range of elements.

A recent example would be Avengers: Endgame; it has sci-fi spectacle, action sequences, dramatic weight, and of course, romantic elements.

No matter how big your movie, it never hurts to have two characters you’re rooting for to either fall or remain in love.

Dune definitely has that.

After tackling a sequel – Blade Runner 2049 – that many fans of Ridley Scott’s original thought should never happen, the majority of audiences were convinced that anything Denis Villeneuve touched turned to cinematic gold.

He is clearly a filmmaker who can make the impossible possible, so what better project for him to helm than Dune. A number of directors have attempted to bring Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel to life, while David Lynch’s 1984 effort remains very divisive.

Plenty of the book’s hardcore fans have thought it to be unfilmable, but as we’ve suggested, Denis is pretty damn good at making a mammoth task look effortless.

As an adaptation, this high-concept extravaganza has won over critics and general audiences alike. However, with a somewhat abrupt ending, a wealth of questions are lingering in the minds of moviegoers right now. Especially this one: Do Paul and Chani end up together in Dune?

Do Paul and Chani end up together in Dune?

Yes, Paul (played by Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya) end up together romantically in the Dune novel and all previous screen adaptations prior to Denis Villeneuve’s film.

They are finally acquainted in the flesh in the final act of Dune: Part One but there is some tension between them. She’s initially hesitant about Paul and believes he’ll die in combat, although he triumphs, and Chani’s skepticism of him is visibly thrown into question.

Despite them not being together as a couple at the end of the movie, there’s no reason to believe they won’t be in the next and final installment, Dune: Part Two.

That’s because no take on Dune has betrayed this very important outcome and Denis’ blockbuster has been incredibly faithful to the source material so far.

Taking this into consideration, the next film will surely see Paul and Chani become lovers and begin to command over the galaxy as a couple destined to be together.

Why does Paul dream about Chani?

The character of Chani is first seen in one of Paul’s dreams and this is also how we’re introduced to her in the novel.

The pair have never met before but it’s established that Paul can witness events that are yet to happen while he’s sleeping, like visions. A number of instances of this are demonstrated in the film, including his encounter with Chani.

Paul discovers that he has inherited the powers of the Bene Gesserit – an organisation of all-women spies – from his mother, Lady Jessica. These skills are amplified on Arrakis thanks to the sands enriched with spice.

The dreams of Chani suggest that they’ll be romantically linked, although Dune: Part One was so busy in terms of the narrative that there wasn’t time for the pair to share a truly romantic moment beyond a dream sequence.

On the other hand, you can rest assured that their blossoming romance will be integral to Part Two, as Paul is tasked with teaching Chani the fighting skills that have been bestowed upon him on Caladan.

In the novel, it’s this intimate time together that allows them to get to know one another and ultimately results in them falling in love.

Is Dune: Part Two a pipedream?

As it stands, it doesn’t look like it.

Although Warner Bros. is yet to greenlight the sequel – which will be the second and final film – it’s already being written and Denis himself has explained that he’s “optimistic” the crew will be given the go-ahead.

It ultimately depends on the box office and Dune was fortunate enough to score a big opening weekend, earning a worldwide gross of $220 million to date.

It’s likely that an announcement will be made in the next month or so. In the meantime, let’s dive into Dune again… and probably again.

Dune is now in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
