Some Newcastle United fans are praising a statement released by the club this afternoon.

During Newcastle’s trip to Crystal Palace at 3pm, the Magpies released a statement about clothing at St James’s Park.

Since Saudi Public Investment Fund completed their takeover in the North East, fans have been wearing head coverings in support of the new regime.

Earlier this week it was reported by The Chronicle that Kick It Out were planning talks to educate Newcastle fans over what could be considered ‘culturally insensitive’ choices of attire.

But in a statement on their official website, released a little over an hour ago, a spokesperson wrote that the new owners have been blown away the welcome from the St James’s Park faithful, with the club confirming that its fans are free to don whatever clothing they like.

Part of the statement read: “Those who wish to support the club by wearing appropriate culturally-inspired clothing should feel free to do so as they see fit. We are inclusive to all.

“To reiterate what we said previously, neither the club nor its new owners were offended by attire worn, and appreciate the overt statements of support and acceptance by our great fans.”

Here’s how some Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter:

On the pitch, Graeme Jones had a decent first result as Newcastle’s interim boss.

Callum Wilson scored an equaliser for the visitors as the Magpies held Patrick Vieira’s side to a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.

Jones will only be in charge for one more game – the clash with Chelsea next week – but this was certainly an encouraging point against a very good Palace outfit.
