Alan Hutton has said on Friday Football Social on BBC Radio 5 Live (7:30pm, October 22, 2021) that Newcastle United will make a mistake if they appoint Paulo Fonseca as their new manager.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa right-back believes that it would be a risk for Newcastle to bring in Fonseca now.

The BBC pundit’s argument is that the 48-year-old does not have the experience of managing in the Premier League.

And Newcastle are in a relegation battle at the moment.

Alan Hutton’s verdict

Hutton said on Friday Football Social on BBC Radio 5 Live (7:30pm, October 22, 2021): “I think it is a risk personally.

“Obviously, he has that European pedigree, he has managed a big club like Roma, but coming into the Premiership, your first job, you need to hit the ground running.

“Obviously they are in the bottom three, they are struggling at the moment, they need a lift.

“This is a guy coming in that has never been there in the Premier League, he doesn’t know what’s it all about to fight relegation, the pressure that comes with it, so I think it’s a risk.”

Paulo Fonseca rumour

The Mirror are reporting that Fonseca is set to become the permanent successor to Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

The Portuguese boss will reportedly earn £6 million per year as salary at the Toon.

Fonseca is claimed to be Amanda Staveley’s preferred choice.

Would Paulo Fonseca be a risk?

Yes, Fonseca has not managed in the Premier League before.

But, that does not mean that the Portuguese will be a failure in England.

Just look at what Nuno did at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Just look at what Xisco did at Watford.

Just look at what Marcelo Bielsa did – and is doing – at Leeds United

Fonseca is a very good manager who did very well at Shakhtar Donetsk and AS Roma.

Let’s give the 48-year-old a chance, please, if indeed he gets the job.

What’s the alternative? Bring in Sam Allardyce?

Come on, let’s not be sceptical of every manager who comes to work in the Premier League from abroad.
