Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Marcelo Bielsa has given a fitness update on Kalvin Phillips ahead of the Whites game against Wolves this weekend.
Phillips has been out of action for a little while now with an injury. He pulled out of the England squad earlier this month and he missed Leeds’ first game after the international break against Southampton last week.
Bielsa noted that Phillips was a doubt against the Saints, and he says that the midfielder will also miss this weekend’s game at Elland Road, despite the fact he is over his injury.
What’s been said?
Bielsa gave an update on the Yorkshire Pirlo.
“Kalvin is healthy, but he hasn’t competed for three weeks. If he played on Saturday it would be far too quick. After three weeks out, it’s necessary some more football training. And in this stage he’s done training sessions for recovery and physical preparation and progressive work with the ball. I think that to think of him for Saturday would be to bring him back too soon before he’s back at his best,” Bielsa said.
It may be frustrating that Phillips isn’t going to play on Saturday, but it’s not all that surprising.
Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa is a real stickler for fitness and if he feels a player isn’t 100 per cent going into a game he won’t risk them.
How often have we seen senior players appear for the U23s at Leeds in order to regain a bit of match fitness after an injury? Bielsa needs his players to be in perfect condition if they’re going to play for him.
Hopefully, Phillips will be able to get a good week’s worth of training under his belt before the Whites’ game against Norwich next weekend.
