Chris Sutton has told BT Sport that he was shocked by Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies’ comments last night.

Worrying comments?

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Vitesse in the UEFA Conference League in a game where they never got going.

Spurs didn’t have a shot on target in the first-half, and despite a brief period of dominance after half-time, their performance then dipped badly.

Ultimately they were beaten 1-0 by their Dutch opponents, who looked highly motivated throughout.

Nuno named a much changed line-up for the contest, with many of Tottenham’s fringe players starting.

However, not one player enhanced their starting chances due to their poor displays.

Davies admitted at full-time that Spurs’ players found it hard to get motivated for the contest, and said that they struggled with the pitch.

And Sutton was stunned to hear the £13 million man’s (London Evening Standard) comments after the game.

“It was quite alarming some of things he said there. Tough to get going? Why? Blaming the pitch, it was the same for both teams! Losing a lot of second balls.

“I don’t understand a lot of what he said there. It’s about taking responsibility.

“They’re playing in the second team at this moment in time for a reason because they’re not good enough to get in the first-team and they’re not applying themselves properly.

“Whatever way you want to look at it, tonight was an opportunity for those players in a Tottenham jersey to go out and have the right attitude and we know they have the ability, then their talent shines. That didn’t happen tonight.”

Benched again?

Tottenham are next in action against West Ham United at the weekend, but it is difficult to see any the players who took part last night starting.

Spurs were so far off the pace yesterday that it was evidence why every player is struggling to break into Nuno’s starting team right now.

Tottenham’s place in the Conference is now in some jeopardy, as they have collected just four points from their first three games.
