Leeds United fans were left impressed with Rodrigo de Paul’s Champions League performance for Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old played 80 minutes for the Spanish champions, as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of free-scoring Liverpool.

Things could have been so different for de Paul because those at Leeds seemingly wanted to sign him up, only for nothing to materialise.

De Paul ended up putting pen-to-paper with Atletico in the summer in a £30 million deal, with the likes of Leeds and Liverpool missing out on his talents, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Well, Leeds fans watched on from afar last night and they liked what they saw from the attack-minded midfielder.

What’s even worse is that Leeds need a player of de Paul’s ilk in their team right now, so watching him thrive on the European stage will be even more difficult to swallow.

The positive the Whites fans can take from it is that he didn’t go to another team not playing in Europe, or to a Premier League rival, where he could have easily ended up rubbing his performances in their face on a weekly basis.

Instead, he is playing for the champions of Spain and a team looking to go deep in the Champions League this season, so at least he has gone right to the top.
