Paulo Fonseca still has a chance of being Newcastle United’s next manager after their shortlist narrowed yesterday, 90 Mins report.
Fonseca to Newcastle?
Newcastle have been linked with several different managerial names across Europe since their takeover went through and it seems that they are now zeroing in on their top choice targets.
The Magpies have reportedly narrowed their shortlist down to three names – Fonseca, Lucien Favre and Eddie Howe.
Fonseca reportedly held talks with Newcastle over the role last week, and the new hierarchy were impressed enough with him to keep him on their shortlist.
The Portuguese manager is famed for a front-foot approach and he has won nine titles throughout his career, which has spanned across three countries.
Fonseca has managed in Portugal, Ukraine and Italy over his career to date, but could now be set to take charge in the Premier League for the first time.
Not the ideal set up?
Newcastle’s squad doesn’t appear ideally set-up for his style of high-octane football right now, but there is a feeling that big changes could be made in January.
If Fonseca was to take charge his immediate task would be to take Newcastle away from danger.

The Magpies are currently second bottom, having only picked up three points from their first eight games.
Newcastle’s defensive weaknesses could be a concern, given that Fonseca is more renowned for getting his side scoring rather than tightening up at the back.
But his arrival would be exciting for Newcastle fans, given his past track record, and he would surely be classed as an upgrade on the struggling Steve Bruce.
