Kanye West has officially changed his name to ‘Ye.’
The rapper’s name change comes as no surprise to his fans.
He has been brooding over it for some time now. He hinted at his desire to change his name from Kanye Omari West to ‘Ye’ back in 2018, and three years later, he has actually done it.
Why did Kanye West change his name?
‘Ye’ has also been a longstanding nickname for him. He featured it in his 2012 hit song Clique featuring Jay-Z and Big Sean for the first time. The lyric said, “Yeah, I’m talking Ye”.
In 2018, the rapper, and business magnate announced on Twitter that he’s no longer “being formally known as Kanye West… I am YE.”
It was Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michelle Williams who approved the God-Breathed rapper’s request to formally change his name. So now, Kanye is just Ye, no middle name or last name.
What does ‘Ye’ mean?
The artist’s eighth studio album was also titled Ye and was released in 2018.
“I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible, it means ‘you,’ ” the singer said in an interview with Big Boy in June that year.
“So I’m you, I’m us, it’s us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion, everything. The album is more of a reflection of who we are,” the rapper explained.
Fans react to the rapper’s changed name
Kanye, now Ye, not only switched up his name but also his haircut to usher in his new era as an artist. Fans were baffled to see his new version.
