Disney has just revealed their upcoming anime project, a television adaptation of the hit mobile game ‘Twisted Wonderland’, but what is the series about?
There are some big moves afoot in the anime industry, with Crunchyroll recently being purchased by Sony Funimation Group and Netflix starting to simulcast series weekly.
However, it looks like Disney are themselves starting to make waves in the anime world, in particular focusing on their mobile game ‘Twisted Wonderland’.
Twisted Wonderland is a Japanese mobile game created by Aniplex and Walt Disney Japan that was released on iOS and Android on March 18th, 2020.
However, it has recently been announced that Twisted Wonderland would be getting an anime adaptation!
What is Twisted Wonderland?
In the Twisted Wonderland video game, players control a young man called Yuu (default name), who is suddenly transported to a magical world.
He arrives at the mysterious magic training school called ‘Night Ravens College’, where he is introduced to the headmaster and the highest-ranking students.
The school dormitories, themes, events and even the characters are loose depictions of various popular Disney franchises.
For example, the silver-haired Azil Ashengrotto is inspired by The Little Mermaid’s Ursula, whilst the red-headed Riddle Rosehearts is based on Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts.
- House Heartslabyul – The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland
- House Savanclaw – Scar from The Lion King
- House Octavinelle – Ursula from The Little Mermaid
- House Scarabia – Jafar from Aladdin
- House Pomefiore – The Evil Queen from Snow White
- House Ignihyde – Hades from Hercules
- House Diasomnia – Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
Has a release date been confirmed?
At the time of writing, neither Disney nor Aniplex have revealed an official release date for the Twisted Wonderland anime series.
In fact, very few details have been revealed at all; with the Walt Disney Japan Twitter page only sharing the official promotional poster online. This includes the animation studio, production staff, voice cast or even character designs.
However, we can make an extremely early prediction based on the production schedule of another Disney anime title, the recently released Star Wars: Visions series. Whilst this show was an anthology series from various production companies, rather than one studio, it does mark the only other original Disney anime project.
Based on the series being recently announced, but the lack of other public information, as well as the production schedule from Star Wars: Visions, a targeted premiere window could fall in July 2022.
Twisted Wonderland will likely be exclusively available to stream through the Disney Plus streaming platform, so don’t expect the series to be simulcast on platforms such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, Netflix or Amazon Prime.
An original manga series…
Interestingly, an original manga series based in the Twisted Wonderland world began serialisation in March 2021 in the Square Enix Monthly G Fantasy magazine.
The first volume ‘Disney Twisted-Wonderland The Comic: Episode of Heartslabyu’ was released in March, which is a loose re-telling of the Heartslabyu arc, with the second shipping on April 27th.
The series is written by Wakana Hazuki and illustrated by Sumire Kowono.
