John McGinn delivered an influential performance to delight some Aston Villa fans reacting on social media, despite Dean Smith’s side losing 3-2 to Wolves in the Midlands derby.

Smith awarded McGinn his seventh start of the Premier League season at home to Bruno Lage’s Molineux natives on Saturday. The Scotland international has now opened the Villa Park outfit’s last five top-flight fixtures, and marked the occasion by assisting and scoring.

McGinn tormented Wolves defender Romain Saiss to find Danny Ings to break the deadlock in the 48th-minute. Feeding the Villans’ £25m summer signing from Southampton with a dangerous delivery to head his third goal of the season.

McGinn later doubled Aston Villa’s lead for his second goal of the Premier League season so far in the 68th-minute. Thundering the ball past Jose Sa on the rebound, after Wolves managed to block Ollie Watkins’ initial effort.

But Wolves pulled a goal back through Saiss after Daniel Podence found the 31-year-old at the back post on 80-minutes. Conor Coady then drew Lage’s side level five-minutes later with only his fourth goal in 285 games for Wolves. While Ruben Neves completed a dramatic late comeback, turning the ball home in the fifth-minute of stoppage-time.
