Mikel Arteta confused quite a lot of Arsenal fans on Thursday.

Asked on the club’s official website whether Matteo Guendouzi could still have a career at Arsenal, Arteta suggested that he might.

He said, when asked if the 23-year-old had played his last game for the Gunners: “I think you cannot say that about a player that is owned by the club.”

Thing is, The Athletic – and others – reported at the time of his loan to Marseille this past summer that the Ligue 1 club had an obligation to buy the French midfielder.

But some fans of the Emirates Stadium club do believe that he’s a goner in spite of Arteta’s comments, suggesting the Spanish coach was skirting around the issue and that he’s done in North London.

Here’s how they reacted to his comments:

Big shame

Arteta’s comments certainly threw a spanner into the works and it remains to be seen what the story is with Guendouzi.

But one thing for sure – it’ll be a big shame if it doesn’t work out at Arsenal.

Under Unai Emery, the club paid only £8 million to sign him from Lorient in the summer of 2018, months after Arsene Wenger left the club.

And he was arguably one of Arsenal’s best players during Emery’s first season in the Premier League.

Given the price-tag, it was looking like the club had found themselves a gem with an enormous re-sale value but, fast forward three years, the North Londoners probably won’t wind up making that big of a profit on the player, who’ll only have one year left on his contract come next summer.
