Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League rivals for next week Atletico Madrid will have a weekend off after their request to postpone their La Liga fixture against Granada was approved.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, the La Liga title holders requested that their league match this weekend was postponed due to a number of South American players being involved in key fixtures this week.
The exact same problem has been a talking point in the Premier League this week. Liverpool, as well as the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United, will be without players on international duty in South America.
Liverpool are likely to travel to Vicarage Road early Saturday afternoon without the likes of Alisson Becker and Fabinho. Indeed, the Premier League were not willing to move the fixture.
This problem, though, has not been an issue in Spain. Atletico’s request was accepted by La Liga. Meaning Diego Simeone’s side will have the weekend off ahead of their UCL clash against Liverpool.
However, whilst the Reds will have Alisson and Fabinho back for that fixture, Atletico no doubt have been awarded an advantage ahead of the massive match next week.
Liverpool fans rage as Atletico are awarded advantage
With La Liga accepting Atletico’s request and the Premier League waving off Liverpool’s, you can imagine the reaction on social media. With Reds’ supporters fuming that their match against Watford can’t be moved back.
Here’s what some Liverpool fans had to say about Atletico having a weekend off on Twitter…
