Netflix has just released Violet Evergarden: The Movie on most international platforms, but has the anime television series been renewed for season 2?
When it comes to anime, fans of the genre are used to the rollercoaster ride of release dates, scheduling delays and false rumours.
However, when there is a prolonged hiatus between seasons, it does get to the point where hope and expectation turn into doubt and uncertainty.
It has been over three years since Violet Evergarden season 1 concluded, but is there now renewed hope that the series could be making a comeback?
Has Violet Evergarden been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, Violet Evergarden has not been officially renewed for season 2 by Kyoto Animation Studio.
Rumours surrounding a potential second season started in 2018 when the studio behind the graphic novels announced that they were working on a ‘new project’. Unfortunately, this was later revealed to be the latest anime movie, rather than a return of the series, see below.
Renewals for anime series typically usually depend on two factors; popularity and source material. In the case of Violet Evergarden, season 1 was immensely popular with fans, scoring an impressive 8.5/10 on IMDB and 8.65/10 on MyAnimeList.
The caveat in season 2’s renewal is down to the source material, which the television series has been only loosely adapting. Four volumes of the original light novel series have been published in Japan, each of which has been mostly covered in the animation.
However, as noted by Monsters and Critics, the anime series skipped back-and-forth across the different volumes, making it difficult to predict a starting point that season 2 could adapt.
“Fortunately, Kyoto Animation announced Violet Evergarden Volume 4, which could serve as the basis for a Violet Evergarden Season 2 anime…Violet Evergarden Ever After was a direct sequel to the main storyline. Based on the way the second book ended, this continuation of the main story was more of an after story since it shows what happens to the main characters even as the world is changing around them.” – Monsters and Critics.
If a second season is being planned, it will therefore need to be a mostly original storyline, which is itself a rarity in the anime industry.
Violet Evergarden: The Movie
The latest Violet Evergarden movie was released on September 18th 2020 in Japan, with the movie being screened in select theatres by Funimation last March.
Violet Evergarden: The Movie launched through most intentional versions of Netflix on October 13th, 2021, with the French version premiering on November 19th.
“Violet Evergarden Movie follows Violet as she continues to comprehend the concept of emotion and the meaning of love. At the same time, she pursues a glimmer of hope that the man who once told her, “I love you,” may still be alive even after the many years that have passed.” – Synopsis, via MAL.
