Is there any player in world football Newcastle United aren’t going to be linked with over the next few months?
Therefore, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see on Tuesday morning that the Magpies were being linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
Kane would undoubtedly be a marquee signing for Newcastle, and only a few months ago it would have sounded absolutely ridiculous to suggest this signing.
The idea of Kane playing for Newcastle was so ridiculous that Steve Bruce even joked about asking the Spurs star if he wanted the number nine shirt over the summer when it was reported that the England captain wanted out of north London.
“I did ask Harry himself when he came up here if he fancied the number 9 jersey,” Bruce said with his tongue very firmly in his cheek.
Bruce’s joke was terrible. It was a typical ‘Dad joke’ Much like a non-league club joking on Twitter about signing Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, and at the time fans really didn’t appreciate the manager’s jovial tone.
However, here we are less than six months later and reports from reliable sources are actually linking the striker recently labelled as ‘brilliant’ by Frank Lampard with a move to Newcastle.
Could this happen? Well, you never would have believed that Manchester City would sign Robinho back in 2008, so we’re not going to write this one off just yet. However, it has to be said, this would be one of the most remarkable transfers in football history.
