Newcastle United are looking at signing giant central defender Niklas Sule on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, Christian Falk of Bild reports

Sule to Newcastle?

Newcastle are said to be interested in landing Sule on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Given Sule’s importance to Bayern it is a surprise that they have let his contract run so close to expiring and Newcastle now appear to be sensing a big opportunity.

If they could land the 26-year-old he would certainly be a real coup for the Magpies.

Sule stands at 6ft 5inches and is very aerially dominant, but his speed has also been complimented before by Germany boss Hansi Flick.

“Niklas is a fast player who is calm on the ball and helps shape the game from the back. Given his size, he has absolute strength and I’m glad he’s on our team,” Flick said to Goal.

A leader for the new era?

Sule would arrive at Newcastle as a commanding presence in their backline and would surely make them much tougher to beat.

His experience of winning four league titles during his time with Bayern would also stand him as good stead to be a leader in Newcastle’s new era.

Falk also says that the signing of Philippe Coutinho is already being ‘seriously discussed’ by Newcastle at boardroom level.

Coutinho may not have reached his top form in recent seasons, but he has previously been one of the Premier League’s top stars.

And seeing players like Sule and Coutinho strongly linked with a move to St. James’ Park has to be considered extremely exciting for Newcastle fans.
