According to Il Matino, Newcastle are targeting a move for Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne, as his contract nears its expiry date.
What’s the story?
Well, the Magpies have £190m to spend on new players after the arrival of Amanda Staveley, Jamie Reuben and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF).
As a result, they are eyeing a move for the captain of Napoli, in what is a huge statement of intent.
Insigne’s contract in Naples expires in June, and he is yet to agree fresh terms with the Serie A side.
Il Matino add that the 30-year-old is considering a move to Major League Soccer (MLS), but Newcastle are keeping tabs on the situation.
Despite his contract situation, Insigne is still delivering the goods.
Can Newcastle sign Lorenzo Insigne?
Before the arrival of PIF, this move would only have been seen on FIFA.
Now, it’s a very real possibility, although the Magpies could face some competition from their Premier League rivals.
According to Area Napoli, Tottenham submitted a bid for Insigne back in July, which obviously proved to be unsuccessful.
Elsewhere, Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli claimed Everton had made an offer of their own more recently.
In that respect, you wouldn’t be surprised to see Spurs and the Toffees involved if Insigne does end up on the free agent market.
Keep an eye on this saga, as we’re sure many clubs will be queuing up to take a player of Insigne’s pedigree for the grand price of £0.
