Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have both pencilled in offers to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone for free next summer.

That’s according to The Sun, who claim that the race for Johnstone is already heating up.

Johnstone is out of contract at the end of the season and allegedly plans to see out his deal and leave West Brom for free.

The 28-year-old is wanted by Southampton, who see Johnstone as their first-choice stopper moving forward.

Tottenham and West Ham have allegedly pencilled in contract offers to sign Johnstone for free when his deal ends.

The England international will now have a big decision to make, with interest mounting well in advance of him becoming a free agent.

Do Tottenham actually need Johnstone?

When you can sign an England international for free, you probably have to push for that deal.

Yet with Johnstone, do Tottenham actually need him?

Hugo Lloris is out of contract at the end of the season, but you would ultimately expect him to stay put.

Pierluigi Gollini is on loan with a view to a permanent move, with Tottenham seemingly viewing him as the eventual heir to Lloris.

Where does Johnstone fit into this? A deal only really makes sense if Lloris goes or Gollini doesn’t sign permanently.

Johnstone is a name to keep an eye on with Tottenham rumours continuing, but surely one player has to leave before he could come in.
