Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter to Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez being nominated for the 2021 Lev Yashin award.

After helping Villa secure 15 clean sheets last season in the Premier League, Martinez then added a trophy to his cabinet when he helped Argentina win the Copa America in the summer.

And now, alongside the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma and Manuel Neuer, he has the chance to claim the top prize for the goalkeeping version of the Ballon d’Or.

Just over a year ago, Arsenal sold Martinez to Villa for £17 million (BBC Sport) and it has been quite the roller coaster for the 29-year-old.

Every Premier League Team's BEST Signing In The Last 7 Years

Those in Arsenal colours can do nothing but dwell over their call to sell Martinez when they did, but others did praise him for being nominated for such a major award.

Whilst Martinez is up against some serious talent, he has a decent chance of walking away with the award, and that’s saying something.

Surely keeping 15 clean sheets in the best league in the world will have a huge factor and also winning a trophy – an international one at that.

Even if he’s not named the top goalkeeper in the world, for him to be amongst such names is a credit to him and his rise during these last 18 or so months.

Arsenal fans have seen a lot of that rise because he helped lift the FA Cup with them before leaving.

And this season, he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down and has helped Villa secure three clean sheets from their first seven league matches.

Nonetheless, here is a selection Arsenal fans reacting to Martinez’s nomination:
