Jon Gruden is in hot water for remarks he reportedly made about DeMaurice Smith in an email back in 2011, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The coach’s status with the Las Vegas Raiders is reportedly being reviewed for “potential discipline” over his email which allegedly consisted of racist, anti-Black imagery.
Meanwhile, DeMaurice has also responded to Jon’s remarks about him, and the latter has apologized.
What did Jon Gruden say?
According to the Journal, in the email sent to former American football executive Bruce Allen, Jon reportedly commented on DeMaurce’s appearance saying, “Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of Michelin tires.”
The players were attempting to resolve a lockout, according to reports, when the email was sent.
The revelation about the email comes as DeMaurice’s position as executive director of the NFLPA is being determined by votes from the 14-member committee.
DeMaurice Smith responds to Raiders coach’s comments
Responding to Jon’s comments, DeMaurice reportedly said that this isn’t the first remark about race made by the coach and “probably will not be the last.”
He said, “This is a thick skin job for someone with dark skin, just like it always has been for many people who look like me and work in corporate America.”
“You know people are sometimes saying things behind your back that are racist just like you see people talk and write about you using thinly coded and racist language,” DeMaurice added further.
Jon Gruden explains his actions
Jon has also issued statements about his problematic remarks while explaining his choice of words to describe DeMaurice. “I’m really sorry,” he said.
The coach reportedly said that he was “upset” with the NFL players led by Smith when the Collective Bargain Agreement was changing. According to Journal, Jon couldn’t “trust” them.
Jon said, “I was upset. I used a horrible way of explaining it.”
“I don’t think he’s dumb. I don’t think he’s a liar, I don’t have a racial bone in my body, and I’ve proven that for 58 years,” he explained further.
The journal report also states that Jon reportedly used “rubber lip” to refer to people he thought were “lying”, but believes he took it “too far” with his remarks about DeMaurice.
