Keith Downie has shared Steve Bruce told him that the scenes outside St James’ Park on Thursday night looked ‘pretty amazing’ after the takeover of Newcastle was complete, as he told Sky Sports News (07/10/21 at 8:05 pm).

The Sky reporter also shared that Bruce is fearing the sack from Newcastle and he felt it would be ‘typical’ if he wasn’t able to take charge of his 1000th game against Tottenham next Sunday.

On Thursday, Newcastle became the richest club in world football, in terms of wealth, when the unpopular Mike Ashley was replaced by a Saudi-based group.

It’s the start of a new era for the North East club and perhaps the start of a road that could seen them end their 60+ year wait for a major trophy.

But Downie spoke to Bruce last night and he shared the ‘mixed feelings’ that were running through the Englishman’s veins.

“He sounded in a fairly philosophical mood when I spoke to him about five minutes ago,” said Downie.

“He said that he is ‘happy for the club’. Happy that it has gone through. Really happy for the supporters and he said that the scenes looked ‘pretty amazing’ outside of the stadium, and he was pleased to see those.

“He said ‘it’s a great night for the fans. I am happiest for them most of all’. He did say that he would like to ‘continue in the role’ but he is ‘realistic’

“He said that he ‘knows what happens in these situations’. There is an expectation on his part, as well as ours and the consortium that they will look to bring in there own man.

“The next match (against Tottenham) would have been Steve Bruce’s 1000th match in charge in management. He said that would be ‘typical’ of him if he got to 999 and then it stopped after that. It’s mixed emotions for him. Happy it’s gone through, but sad that it feels and seems like his time will come to an end.”

Bruce is still Newcastle boss, but the question has to be asked, for how long?

It would be a shock if, by the end of the month, Bruce is still in charge because whenever new ownership comes in, they like to appoint their own people.

And this will be no different, added with the fact that Newcastle are in the relegation zone and they are yet to win a game this season.
