Leeds United face a quiet January transfer window for incomings as Director of Football Victor Orta questions the value for money available in mid-season deals, per The Athletic.

Orta has long held reservations about winter spending as the cost of moves rarely matches a player’s true worth. The Spaniard has overseen 11 players arrive at Elland Road in January deals since his own arrival in May 2017.

But seven of the 11 to move to Leeds in mid-season deals came during the 2017/18 season. Adam Forshaw’s arrival from Middlesbrough that winter also remains their most expensive January transfer under Orta so far at £4.5m.

Leeds have dipped into the January transfer window if Orta spots possible opportunities to strengthen Marcelo Bielsa’s squad. The 2019 market saw Kiko Casilla join from Real Madrid on a free, while youngster Ian Poveda moved from Manchester City for free a year later.

Orta is unlikely to sanction any large expenditures this winter as he and Leeds are ‘less and less convinced’ January transfers work for Bielsa. Instead, the West Yorkshire outfit will likely wait until the summer when a new centre-mid may be among their priorities.

Only if Leeds are in a precarious league position is Orta expected to consider major January transfer investment. Bielsa oversaw the Elland Road outfit’s first win of the season against Watford prior to the international break. But the Whites only sit 16th after three defeats.

Should Leeds invest in January transfer window?

Orta will be aware that Leeds will need to invest in midfield transfers at some stage in the near future. Bielsa has not yet awarded Forshaw any minutes in the league, while Mateusz Klich has produced a steady start.

Bielsa has also kept Tyler Roberts to a predominantly back-up role, while Jamie Shackleton has featured mostly at right-back. Stuart Dallas has additionally struggled to match the form shown last season, to highlight the need for fresh impetus soon.
