Where is Kurulus Osman season 3 filmed?

Kurulus Osman is a Turkish production through and through, so it is no surprise that the filming takes place across the Anatolian region.

However, filming on the series is far more concentrated than viewers may realise, with the first two seasons being produced in the coastal village of Riva, in the Beykoz district of Istanbul.

The coastal village was also the filming location for the prequel series and is technically classed as just a ‘neighbourhood’ for administrative purposes, with a population of only 1,585 people as of a 2011 census.

Riva sits on the Cayagzi creek to the Black Sea and retains various rural features, most prominently the Riva Castle from the Byzantine era.

Interestingly, in Greek mythology, the leader of Argo sailors ‘Lason’ received an iron anchor from the region on his quest to find the Golden Fleece. This resulted in the surrounding region being known as ‘Ancyranum’ when the Eastern Roman Empire was at its peak influence.

However, a brand-new production studio was constructed for the filming of season 3 in Nevsehir; a decision likely planned before the pandemic but encouraged further by the constant disruptions to on-location filming.

Nevsehir, formerly known as Neapolis and Muskara, is the capital district in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. The region has a fascinating history, with the first settlement being founded by the Hittites, a group of people dating back to 1750 BC.

Indoor scenes were also reportedly filmed in an old shoe factory in Beykoz, Istanbul.

Who produces Kurulus Osman?

Kurulus Osman is helmed by Turkish screenwriter, producer and director Mehmet Bozdag and his production company, Bozdag Films.

The 38-year-old made his professional debut in 2009 as a screenwriter on the TRT documentary series ‘Son Ruya and Kardes Sehirler’.

However, it was in 2014 when Bozdag made his leap to international success when he produced Kurulus Osman’s prequel series, Dirilis: Ertugrul.

This year, not only is Bozdag Films working on the third season of Kurulus Osman, but also another ATV series called Mendirman Jaloiddin.

Interestingly, the producer announced in May 2020 that he wants to collaborate with the Pakistani government on future productions – so expect plenty more epic titles to come!
