Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is expected to start for Japan against Saudi Arabia today – but Celtic attacker Kyogo Furuhashi isn’t.
They have posted their expected lineup for Japan’s clash against Saudi Arabia this evening.
Tomiyasu is named at centre back alongside Maya Yoshida. Arsenal fans know him as a right back, but Hiroki Sakai is expected to play there.
Tomiyasu has enjoyed a great start to life at Arsenal. In his four Premier League games, Arsenal have conceded just once and dropped only two points.
Japan will now be hoping to see Tomiyasu bring that form to the international stage.
As for Celtic star Furuhashi, he did start Japan’s last game against China.
However, he picked up an injury on international duty and has only just returned to action for Celtic.
It’s predicted that Furuhashi will miss out on a striking role to Vissel Kobe’s Yuya Osako.
Furuhashi is thought to be an option on the right flank with Junya Ito suspended. However, PSV Eindhoven’s Ritsu Doan is expected to feature there, with Takumi Minamino and Daichi Kamada ‘undroppable’.
This may ultimately be good news for Celtic.
Furuhashi is only just back from injury and needs to have his minutes managed. They certainly don’t want Furuhashi to pick up another injury with Japan.
Leaving him on the bench today and using him as an impact substitute could be the best outcome for Celtic, who will be a little nervous about their star man.
Celtic only just got Furuhashi back from injury and are now left waiting to hope he comes back unscathed.
Limited minutes today would likely help that hope, even if Furuhashi will be personally gutted to miss out on a start for Japan.
