Maid’s release date and plot

Maid arrived on Netflix on Friday, October 1st, 2021.

Based on the best-selling memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, the series tells the story of Alex, a single mother who becomes a housecleaner in an attempt to make ends meet.

After escaping an abusive relationship, Alex and her daughter, Maddy, are living on, if not below the poverty line, and only Alex’s determination will help them overcome their plight.

Alex’s ‘love interests’ in Maid

In Maid, we see that Alex has two love interests, for want of a better term.

They are her abusive boyfriend Sean and her apparent knight in shining armour, Nate.

The series begins with Alex attempting to escape from Sean, Maddy’s father, sneaking out in the middle of the night.

It’s clear from the opening episode that Sean is abusive and has had some long-standing issues since childhood.

However, he’s Maddy’s father and Alex was infatuated with him when they first got together.

Nate, meanwhile, is introduced in episode 2 and quickly becomes one of the only lights in Alex’s dark life after he finds her sleeping on the floor of the ferry terminal.

He gives her, Maddy and Alex’s mother Paula a place to stay and some much-needed stability.

However, Nate has long-held harbours romantic feelings for Alex since the pair worked together at a bar a few years earlier.

Who does Alex end up with?

In the end, Alex doesn’t choose either Sean or Nate.

While Nate may seem like Alex’s saviour when he gives her a place to stay, his offer comes with conditions as he would like to pursue a romantic relationship with her.

However, Alex doesn’t feel the same way and although he reins in his advances, he still hopes for a relationship.

In episode 7, Alex and Sean sleep together after teaming up to help Alex’s mother Paula and when Alex admits this to Nate, he asks her to move out as the relationship he’d hoped for is most certainly off the table.

Conversely, Alex and Sean end up in a custody battle over Maddy and while Sean is initially allowed four-hour visitations, it’s revealed that his drinking problems have not subsided.

As a result, Sean signs over full custody of Maddy to Alex.

At the end of the final episode, Alex and Maddy embark on a new chapter in their lives as they catch a ferry to Montana.

While Alex’s mother briefly wanted to go with them, she changes her mind at the last minute, leaving Alex and Maddy to go it alone.

Maid is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on October 1st, 2021.
