Liverpool’s hopes of signing Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic could now be dented with rivals Manchester United now hoping to land him.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who claim that United are seriously looking into signing midfielders.

Paul Pogba’s future is still unclear whilst Donny van de Beek could leave in January.

One option United are really considering is Brozovic, whose contract situation means he could leave Inter.

The Croatian star is out of contract at the end of the season and could simply leave for nothing.

Brozovic was a key part of Inter’s title-winning side last season. In truth, he may be one of the most underrated midfielders in Europe.

The 28-year-old had relentless energy, great defensive ability in front of the back four and a superb passing range.

Brozovic may not be a long-term option given his age, but he’s very appealing on a free transfer.

Liverpool’s interest in Brozovic

Liverpool have long been linked with Brozovic, and an interesting rumour emerged in August.

Inter Live reported that Liverpool were already plotting to sign Brozovic on a free transfer next summer.

An offer of around £115,000-a-week was allegedly in Liverpool’s plans, hoping that Brozovic would not sign a new Inter deal.

So far, it hasn’t happened. Liverpool still have a shot at Brozovic even if United are now keen too.

You would have to question whether Brozovic is the right profile for Liverpool though. At almost 29, Brozovic is a similar age profile to Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson in midfield.

Brozovic also prefers to operate from deep, so spending those wages on competition for Fabinho just doesn’t seem like a Liverpool kind of move.

A quality player with potential free agent status, Brozovic will be appealing to many clubs – but United make more sense than Liverpool at this stage.
