Starring Margaret Qualley, Maid is one of Netflix’s newest arrivals and it will be a hard-hitting watch for many as it details the struggles of living in poverty for a young woman and her daughter after leaving her abusive boyfriend.
During the series, the main character Alex gets a cleaning job in a luxurious mansion on Fisher Island, highlighting the disparity between her situation and those of her employer.
However, since Maid released on Netflix, fans have been left asking just where Fisher Island is and if the idyllic location is a real place.
Maid’s release date and plot
Maid arrived on Netflix on Friday, October 1st, 2021.
Based on the best-selling memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, the series tells the story of Alex, a single mother who becomes a housecleaner in an attempt to make ends meet.
After escaping an abusive relationship, Alex and her daughter, Maddy, are living on, if not below the poverty line, and only Alex’s determination will help them overcome their plight.
Fisher Island in Maid
Fisher Island is introduced in Maid’s opening episode as Alex manages to find work cleaning a huge mansion belonging to the wealthy Regina.
The island is supposedly located in Washington State in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
However, neither Fisher Island nor the town of Port Hampstead are actually real locations as they are both fictional places created for the series.
In reality, the city of Port Townsend likely served as inspiration for Port Hampstead as the town is where author Stephanie Land lived in her late 20s according to Screen Rant.
As a result, this means that Fisher Island is most likely based on the nearby Whidbey Island, which is the closest island ferry commute from the city of Port Townsend.
There is a real Fisher Island located in Washington State but it’s a featureless land mass located on the Columbia River to the south while the Fisher Island in the series plays host to several large houses and panoramic views of what is supposedly the Puget Sound.
Where was Maid filmed?
Maid was filmed in and around the province of British Columbia in Canada.
That’s right, while Maid is supposed to take place in Washington State in the US, the series was actually filmed north of the border.
This is likely due to the fact that filming costs are usually cheaper in Canada while still getting to use the country’s great scenery.
Filming on the series began in September 2020 and continued until April the following year with locations from Greater Victoria and Vancouver playing host to film crews.
One of the chief locations used in the series was the city of Colwood, which stands in as the town of Port Hampstead in the series.
Meanwhile, the Saanich neighbourhood at Ten Mile Point served as the location of Regina’s house, the luxurious mansion where Alex got her first job on Fisher Island.
Maid is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on October 1st, 2021.
