Chris Wilder would ‘love’ the chance to become Newcastle United boss if Steve Bruce was to lose his job any time soon.

That’s according to The Chronicle, who claim that Wilder will apply for the Newcastle job if it becomes available.

Wilder seemingly believes he can get Newcastle moving forward and would love to take the reins.

The 54-year-old has been out of work since leaving Sheffield United earlier this year, and seemingly has his sights set on the Magpies.

Wilder could be a coup for Newcastle

Wilder’s work at Sheffield United almost made him a national treasure.

A boyhood Blade, Wilder guided his club from League One to the top half of the Premier League in a stunning run.

Wilder popularised overlapping centre backs in his 3-5-2 system and pledged a never-say-die attitude at Bramall Lane.

Branded ‘phenomenal’ by Emile Heskey, Wilder did struggle with Sheffield United last season but has surely done enough to win another Premier League job.

Ashley unlikely to make a change

The problem for Wilder is that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley seemingly isn’t planning to sack Steve Bruce any time soon.

The Magpies are still without a Premier League win this season and Bruce is coming under increasing pressure.

However, Ashley doesn’t want to pay off Bruce and his coaching staff given that he still wants to sell the club.

Bruce doesn’t want to quit his boyhood club either, so Wilder may have to bide his time if he wants the Newcastle job.
