Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told the club’s official website that Albert Sambi Lokonga is getting better.

Arteta was impressed by the performance of Lokonga during Arsenal’s goalless draw with Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League at the weekend.

The Arsenal boss has admitted that it was not the kind of game that suited the 21-year-old midfielder.

However, Arteta believes that the Belgium international did well, and that the midfielder is getting better.

Arteta said about Lokonga: “I think he did really well. I think he had one of the best performances from the players on the pitch.

“He shows a lot of character and all the time good positions. I think his defensive work and understanding is getting better.

“It was a really difficult game because it was all the time one v one duels all over the pitch and it’s not the game that really suits him the most, but I think under the circumstances, he did really well.”

Positive progress report

Lokonga cost Arsenal £17.2 million in transfer fees when they signed him from Anderlecht in the summer of 2021, as reported by BBC Sport.

The Belgian was signed as cover for Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka in defensive midfield, but the youngster has found himself playing quite regularly already.

The Arsenal no.23 has made four starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season.

The 21-year-old has also played once in the Carabao Cup.

With Xhaka now on the sidelines for three months, Lokonga is going to get more opportunities in the coming weeks and has a great chance of making himself a regular alongside Partey in the middle of the park for Arsenal for good.
