Tottenham Hotspur still don’t really have competition for Harry Kane up front, and passing on Benfica’s Darwin Nunez doesn’t look like the best move.
Kane has yet to score a Premier League goal this season and looks badly out of form.
Carlos Vinicius left the club over the summer and wasn’t replaced, with Tottenham still yet to solve the conundrum of signing a striker to support Kane.
Mourinho picked Vinicius over Nunez
The Daily Mail reported in the summer of 2020 that Tottenham were interested in signing Darwin Nunez from Almeria.
Jose Mourinho decided against the move and instead decided to sign Vinicius on loan from Benfica.
The irony is that Nunez ended up signing for Benfica – and is faring well in Portugal.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan hit 14 goals in all competitions last season and has started this term on fire with six goals in seven outings.
Strong and mobile, Nunez is the kind of centre forward Tottenham need to support Kane – especially considering his potential.

Nunez enjoys big night for Benfica
Nunez opened the scoring for Benfica in a 3-0 Champions League thrashing of Barcelona last night.
Cutting in from the left channel, Nunez fired a low right-footed strike into the net inside just three minutes.
After Rafa Silva made it 2-0, Nunez stepped up from the penalty spot to rattle in the third, giving Benfica a memorable win.
This is the kind of impact Tottenham need from a backup striker.
If Tottenham went for Nunez now, he would almost certainly cost more than if Mourinho had signed him from Almeria.
Passing on him to take Vinicius on loan maybe wasn’t the best move, with the benefit of hindsight.
