54-year-old singer R Kelly has just been found guilty of sexually abusing many women and children throughout his music career.

The trial has been taking place for the last six weeks, but who was R Kelly’s defense attorney? Meet Deveraux Cannick.
Meet R Kelly’s defense attorney
R Kelly’s lawyer, who defended him during the six-week trial, is Deveraux Cannick.
The New York-based attorney studied at Fordham University School of Law and has spent most of his career as a lawyer in the Bronx County District.
Over his career, he has covered both criminal and civil cases and has been involves in a number of high-profile cases.
In 1990, he was selected as the lead prosecutor in the People of the State of New York v. Larry Davis case, one of the most publicised cases in the Bronx, where Larry Davis was charged with multiple homicides.
Deveraux Cannick responds to R Kelly’s guilty verdict
After the guilty verdict, Deveraux said that he and R Kelly were “disappointed” with the result and argued that the defense team would appeal it.
“He [R Kelly] was not anticipating this verdict because based on the evidence, why should he anticipate this verdict,” he told the New York Times.
“You saw witness after witness giving three, four, five different versions as to what they said happened here. The government cherry-picked the version they thought would be a continuation of the narrative that was first put out by Surviving R Kelly,” he continued.
Deveraux claimed that the court “ignored the inconsistencies” that the witnesses gave and said that he is “disappointed” by not just the “jury’s verdict” but also the “government’s actions” in the case.
Who was the prosecution lawyer?
There was a whole team of different attorneys prosecuting R Kelly during the trial.
However, the prosecution was led by Elizabeth Geddes, who has worked in the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn for 15 years.
She has lots of experience in racketeering cases and delivered the final statement at R Kelly’s trial.
