John Hartson has fumed on Twitter at Celtic’s lack of depth after seeing Ange Postecoglou’s side suffer yet further injury blows as they dropped two points at home to Dundee United.

The Hoops’ hopes of reclaiming the Premiership title from Rangers are now hanging by a thread after just seven games. Celtic sit sixth in the table, six-points off the top spot, with three wins to three defeats and a draw.

Celtic went ahead early on against Dundee United, but Ian Harkes headed home just two minutes after Liel Abada scored. The Hoops then spurned several chances; hitting the post three times, while Albian Ajeti blazed the ball over an open goal from just three-yards out.

Ajeti again produced a glaring miss in the second-half when he headed wide from six-yards out. Postecoglou’s side piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but Celtic had no luck in retaking the lead. Jota coming closest late on when his dipping effort struck the crossbar.

Hartson fumes at Celtic squad depth

Along with dropping points to Dundee United, who stay above Celtic in fifth, Postecoglou suffered yet more injury woes. Giorgos Giakoumakis had already developed a calf issue while warming up during the first-half against Raith Rovers on Thursday.

Per the Daily Record, Giakoumakis may return next week when the Hoops face Aberdeen. But Josip Juranovic and James McCarthy have since joined Celtic’s injury list that already featured Kyogo Furuhashi, Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Mikey Johnston.

Celtic’s mounting injury problems have frustrated Hartson, who believes Postecoglou lacks the depth needed for the Parkhead side to challenge.

“Another disappointing result,” Hartson wrote. “Need to get our best players on the pitch it seems to win football matches. As the squad simply not deep enough. Today, not ruthless enough. Two points dropped.”

Postecoglou – and Hartson – will be desperate for positive news on Celtic’s injury problems ahead of facing Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday. The Bundesliga outfit travel to Parkhead in midweek with the chance to put six-points between the Hoops and progressing.
