Ivan Toney has told Rangers legend Ally McCoist on talkSPORT (8:40am, September 27, 2021) that he had the chance to sign for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers as well as Celtic.

During an interview with Toney live on talkSPORT this morning, Rangers great McCoist told the Brentford striker that he is happy that he did not move to Celtic.

The former Newcastle United striker responded by saying that he had the chance to join Rangers as well.

The Scottish Sun quoted the 25-year-old as saying in April 2021 that he was close to signing for Celtic in the summer of 2020.

Peterborough United’s Barry Fry said in June 2020 that Rangers were tracking Toney, as quoted in The Scottish Sun at the time.

McCoist told Toney on talkSPORT (8:40am, September 27, 2021): “You have no idea as a Rangers supporter how happy I am that you didn’t go to Celtic, by the way. I am absolutely thrilled about that.”

Toney responded: “Like you said I was going to sign for Celtic, but I was also going to sign for Rangers. So you might react to that.”

A shocked McCoist said: “I didn’t know that! Oh, you’ve killed me! I didn’t know that, man!”

The striker helped the Bees win promotion from the Championship and is now flying in the Premier League.

The former Newcastle man has scored two goals and provided two assists in six Premier League appearances for Brentford so far this season.

Toney scored 33 goals and gave 10 assists in 47 Championship starts for the Bees last season.
