Has Battle Game in 5 Seconds been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Battle Game in 5 Seconds has not been renewed for a second season and unfortunately, it remains unclear whether the anime series will return.

On the one hand, there is plenty of source material left from Saizo Harawata’s original manga series to produce another television season; often a critical factor in determining an anime renewal.

By the time the credits roll on season 1 episode 12, the series is expected to adapt up until volume 7 chapter 63 of the manga – thankfully, a total of 17 volumes have already been published in Japan.

On the other hand, reviews of Battle Game in 5 Seconds season 1 have been decidedly mixed from both critics and fans alike. Crunchyroll may not publicly reveal their viewership statistics for simulcast titles, but the anime is scoring a slightly above-average 7.1/10 on MyAnimeList with only 20,000 reviews.

One user stated that the series was “a poorly done anime adaptation”, whilst another adding that it “wasn’t executed as well as it could have been.”

However, there are also a plethora of positive reviews, with fans praising the main premise and some even critiquing the disappointing scores on MyAnimeList.

Interestingly, the decision on a renewal may be down to the success of two upcoming projects from SynergySP animation studios, Taisho Otome Fairy Tale and A Couple of Cuckoos.

These two titles, along with Battle Game in 5 Seconds, are the only titles that SynergySP have confirmed to be working on with Taisho Otome Fairy Tale premiering in October 2021 and A Couple of Cuckoos scheduled for 2022

This means that the production company may wait until they can assess all three projects before making a decision on which of these series warrants investing their resources into renewing.

If Battle Game in 5 Seconds is indeed renewed for season 2, fans could expect the anime to return for another round in October 2022 on the Fall anime slate.
