William Gallas has stated on Instagram that he has been ‘misquoted’ with his comments that Arsenal should have purchased Raphael Varane instead of Ben White.

The former Premier League defender made it clear that ‘I never actually said’ that Arsenal should have purchased the now-Manchester United player.

In the summer, both Manchester United and Arsenal dipped into the summer market for a centre-back.

Those at the Emirates looked on familiar shores and brought in White from free-flowing Brighton.

Whilst serial-winner Varane left Spain and Real Madrid to try and make a name for himself at Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, Gallas provided three images, from his Instagram story, including a clip, of what he actually said compared to what was printed by one of the newspapers.

“As I mentioned in my video,” said Gallas. “I felt that I was totally misquoted on my remarks regarding Ben White and is, therefore, important that I set the records straight.

“For ease of reference, I have included an extract from the interview I gave where you can draw your own conclusion.

“As you can see, I never actually said that Arsenal ought to have recruited Raphael Varane instead of Ben White.”

It’s pretty clear that Gallas was simply questioning how White could be worth or purchased for £50 million, yet a World Cup winner in Varane is worth less.

There is always that argument of English tax and how British players are worth a lot more.

Given that White has barely touched international football, and only completed his first season in England’s top-flight last term, then Gallas’ claims are valid.

Yes, Varane did have one year left on his Real Madrid contract, but it’s pretty clear who got the better deal.
