The University of Utah’s football team has been struck by a repeat tragedy, as they have lost Ty Jordan and now Aaron Lowe.
News of Aaron Lowe’s death broke on Sunday, 26 September 2021. This comes exactly nine months after the passing of Ty Jordan.
What happened to Aaron Lowe?
On 26 September 2021, it was reported that Aaron Lowe had been shot and killed in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The 21-year-old football player was a sophomore at the University of Utah and played as a cornerback. The Salt Lake City Police Department said the shooting occurred at a home around three miles southeast of Rice-Eccles Stadium, Utah’s home stadium, in the early hours of 26 September. The shooting left Aaron Lowe dead and another in critical condition. They remain in hospital, while police have yet to identify a suspect.
This comes as heartbreaking news to the Utah team, as they now mourn both Aaron and late teammate Ty Jordan.
A statement was released from Head Coach Kyle Whittingham and Director of Athletics Mark Harlan. Coach Whittingham wrote: “Aaron was a great teammate, friend, brother and son and was loved by anyone who crossed paths with him. He will be deeply missed.”

Aaron Lowe and Ty Jordan’s friendship
Not only were the late Aaron Lowe and Ty Jordan teammates at Utah, they were also best friends. They had known each other since their days playing football at West Mesquite High School in Texas. The two had moved to the University of Utah to continue their football journeys, with dreams of playing in the NFL.
In light of Ty Jordan’s passing back in December 2020, Aaron Lowe switched his number from 2 to 22 to honour his late friend.
Fans are suggesting that the #22 should be retired by Utah to honour both Lowe and Jordan.

Aaron receives the Ty Jordan Scholarship
Given their closeness, last month saw Aaron Lowe become the first-ever recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship fund was established to honour Ty Jordan’s legacy. Utah’s Leadership Council nominated a select group of student-athletes, which were then voted on by the whole team to decide on the recipient.
We send our condolences to Aaron Lowe and Ty Jordan’s families at this difficult time.
